Yaskawa Solectria working on new inverter model customized for First Solar panels

Yaskawa Solectria Solar has announced that it is partnering with First Solar to develop a new version of the SOLETRIA XGI 1500-250 utility string inverter. The improvements optimize the XGI 1500-250 for First Solar’s advanced thin-film modules.

“At Yaskawa Solectria Solar, we aim to strengthen our position as technology leaders and build on the proven technology of our XGI 1500 inverters. Both companies have US-based design and manufacturing, and this partnership brings our engineering teams and leading-edge technology together at the right time. We have very exciting opportunities ahead of us working closely with First Solar,” said Miles C. Russell, director of product management at Yaskawa Solectria Solar.

In this partnership between the two companies, Yaskawa Solectria Solar, the only US-based manufacturer of commercial and utility string inverters, brings its broad experience in inverter design and US-based manufacturing to the initiative. The aim is to create a version of its new SOLETRIA XGI 1500-250 utility string inverter that allows for a grounded DC input, thereby ensuring optimal integration with First Solar’s high performance Series 6 and Series 7 advanced thin film PV modules. Developed in First Solar’s R&D labs in California and Ohio, these PV modules set the industry standard for reliable energy production, optimized design and environmental performance.

“We expect Solectria’s new inverter design, combined with First Solar’s module technology, will help asset owners and managers further improve the LCOE of their solar installations,” said Alex Kamerer, product management manager for First Solar. “This effort represents the best of US solar, combining leading US-developed photovoltaic technology with US-developed inverter technology to deliver an optimized solution for US solar resources.”
