Shaw’s ReWorx named in Innovation by Design awards

Dalton-Shaw Industries’ ReWorx floors are recognized in: Fast company‘s Innovation by Design awards for 2022, which honor the designers and companies who solve today’s most critical problems and anticipate tomorrow’s pressing problems. ReWorx floors received an honorable mention in three categories: Circular Design, Materials and Sustainability.

The newly introduced hybrid floor covering offers the warmth and cleanability of a soft surface with the durability of a hard surface and is designed to meet the performance and durability needs of a wide range of commercial properties, Shaw said. Made from 100% PET fiber, ReWorx floors contain an average of 61 recycled post-consumer plastic bottles per square meter and are fully recyclable into new ReWorx floors at the end of their first floor life.

Shaw’s environmental warranty allows the product to be collected free of charge for the customer using the re[TURN] Reclamation Program to be recycled into the next generation of ReWorx floors, continuing the landfill cycle.

ReWorx floors will be available in the first quarter of 2023 from Shaw’s Patcraft, Philadelphia Commercial and Shaw Contract brands and are Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze (v3.1) and have been assessed for material health, product circularity, clean air and climate protection, water and soil management and social justice.

“We have been committed to designing safe and circular products according to Cradle to Cradle design principles for over 20 years,” said Tim Baucom, president and CEO of Shaw Industries. “We are a customer-centric organization and ReWorx exemplifies our long-standing commitment to helping those customers design spaces for people and planet, demonstrating how sustainability and innovation are inextricably linked.”

Kellie Ballew, vice president of global sustainability and innovation, added: “Shaw launched the world’s first PVC-free, recyclable carpet tile, EcoWorx, in 1999. We saw an opportunity to meet the design, performance and sustainability needs of customers in a completely new way, EcoWorx eventually became our first Cradle to Cradle certified product and the first flooring product in the world to meet this rigorous product standard. Today, nearly 90% of the products we manufacture are Cradle to Cradle certified. ReWorx continues that legacy, illustrating the power of great teams that come together from across the company – sharply focused on our customers’ current and future needs and constantly looking for inventive ways to design products with people and planet in mind.”

The Innovation by Design Awards competition, now in its 11e years, features a range of blue-chip companies, emerging startups and young talents. According to Shaw, it is one of the most coveted design awards in the industry. “A common theme among this year’s Innovation by Design awards, ranging from healthcare interfaces to autonomous driving technology, is sustainability,” said Brendan Vaughn, editor-in-chief of Fast company. “The products that stood out to our editors and judges went against our quick-fix consumer culture, while also manifesting a more inclusive vision of design.”
