Seward County Commission Meets, Awards Scholarships

The Seward County Commission met Monday night for their regular meeting and awarded 2 scholarships to the Students of Employees. Each year, the committee may award two $400.00 scholarships. Applicants must be the child or grandchild of a Seward County employee, must be enrolled full-time in the fall semester, and have a GPA of 2.75 or higher. Both this year’s winners have met these requirements. The staff committee has 2 scholarship certificates to award to the following students: Khiley Davis daughter of Cindy & Donny Davis-Treasures Office and Aubrey Warden daughter of April & Ron Warden, administrator of Seward County.

The Commission left the $1,500 to the KNRC for a special assessment of costs related to the inclusion of the small prairie chicken, in the absence of a motion, and heard from Brie Greeson, director of the health department, of an update on COVID-19 .

AK Roofing gave a presentation at the committee meeting to discuss the Courthouse Roofing Project, and the commissioners approved an amendment to Resolution 2021-18 to correct a typographical error.

The county will receive between $4.1 and $4.2 million as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The county has received proposals for a consulting firm to provide expertise to enhance the capabilities of staff to ensure compliance with federal regulations. while maximizing the beneficial use of Rescue Plan dollars in the local community. The amount cannot exceed $192,760.00. This will come back with more information before the next Commission.

The Commission approved the recruitment of two new rural firefighters and approved the notification to the office of the Registry of the revenue neutral rate of 50 million for the general budget and 8 million for rural fire services. The Commission also set the hearing for both on 7 September.
