Retailers React: What surprised you in 2022

Every two weeks, FCNews seeks out flooring stores across the country to provide advice on current topics. This week we asked: What was your biggest surprise in mid-2022?

Here are their reactions:

The biggest surprise for Friendly Floors is that despite the price increases, freight increases, interest rate hikes and runaway inflation, there has been no drop in sales. We are very grateful.

– Majorie Benson, Friendly Floors, Port Charlotte, Florida.

Inflation has been at an all-time high all my life and people are still spending money. We’re only 9% off retail sales – very encouraging as we had a record 45% growth in 2021. I never want to go backwards, but last year was great.

—Brian McCarver, Brian’s Flooring & Design Birmingham, Ala.

Our industry, like others, continues to be plagued by supply chain problems, extraordinarily high inflation and lack of employees. I am totally amazed at the amount of cases still coming in. I hope this isn’t a bus accident waiting to happen.

– Bill Zeigler, Charles F. Zeigler & Sons, Hanover, Pa.

The biggest surprise is our volume. Our monthly sales have remained strong, but the cost of inflation has reduced margins.

-Bobby Merideth, Flooring America OKC, Oklahoma City

The biggest surprise for me for 2022 was how strong the market remained for so long. Consumers are still buying and the availability of flooring products should be affected as much as many other building materials.

– Kate Butcher, CarpetsPlus ColorTile Bloomington, Bloomington, Ind.
