Retailers of the Year 2022: Flooring 101 & Meek’s

Shopkeeper of the Year 2022Specialty flooring retailers are the driving force behind this industry. Their success fuels every channel from residential retail to commercial. To honor these companies, FCNews publishes its inaugural Retailers of the Year edition. It is an attempt to draw attention to those retailers who excel or distinguish themselves in some aspect of their business. In this issue, suppliers and vendors nominated retailers they think deserve a mention and why they stand out from the crowd.

FCNewsThe 2022 edition of Retailers of the Year features some of the industry’s most experienced dealers from influential buying groups and smaller retailers without group membership. In other words, it reflects retail as a whole.

When choosing their top retailer partners, suppliers looked beyond sales volume to other key attributes such as communication skills, trust, corporate culture and even benevolence as differentiators. Suppliers/sellers nominated up to four retailers (or in some cases distributors) for consideration and explained why they stood out. FCNews then narrowed down the winners based on the scope of merit awarded to each.

We have been a partner of Lions Floor for about three years now and their products have done very well in our stores. The look they have is a West Coast look that sells in our market. It’s also easy to work with. We’ve had no issues with the product itself and our salespeople are happy to work with it.

Lions just became a Specialized supplier to the NFA, so they will be featured at our Las Vegas show on Surfaces. That will be a win/win. It will benefit us because they can add more value; bring more to the table for us. And it is good that we can recommend a supplier with whom we have been successful for the past three years to other members of the group.

Lions Floor is also very responsive to all of our pricing and showroom maintenance needs. The answer I get from the team is that they are very responsive to their needs. They serve us the way we like to serve our customers. And we like to see the success of a company that serves its customers well.

Lions Floor was an exhibitor at The International Surface Event (TISE) in January 2022. We showed our LVT collections to new and existing customers. One of the new contacts made at the event was Mike Lockman, flooring sales manager at Meeks Midwest, a division of USLBM. Mike provided great feedback to Jerry Guo, president of Lions Floor, and together they worked on a program for Meeks Midwest’s 27 locations. The program was aimed at consolidating the core suppliers for LVT with two major suppliers in the US market, including Lions Floor. The partnership has taken off and with the opening of Lions Floor in Houston, Texas, Mike has been able to introduce Lions Floor to other divisions of USLBM, including Parkers Building Supply and Higginbotham’s.

“As we expand our footprint in the US market by adding more distribution centers, including Dallas in Spring 2023, Lions Floor will be able to serve Meeks Midwest and other divisions of USLBM more efficiently and well into the future,” said Guo.

With over 100 years of experience in the wood and building materials industry, Meek’s has earned a reputation as a provider of expert service, as well as quality construction and home improvement products. From the opening of our first building materials store in Lockwood, Mo., in 1919 to today, Meek’s recognizes the value and heritage of deep, local customer relationships as a strong foundation for growth. Currently, Meek’s operates 24 lumberyards in Arkansas and Missouri and 10 lumberyards in California and Nevada.

In 2022, we brought Lions Floor collections to seven locations across the Meek’s Midwest organization, centrally serving all 24 locations and being the exclusive Lions Floor dealer in our region. One of our LBM sister chains, Parker’s, also brought Lions Floor to seven of their locations. By 2023, we aim to expand our Lions footprint to a minimum of 30-50 additional locations in US LBM. Lions has been a great supplier, delivering an excellent product with great visuals and sturdy construction, while also providing great customer service and communication with on-time shipping and top-notch supplier support at corporate events and more.
