Mannington Commercial launches carbon offset products

Carbon CompensationCalhoun, Ga.-Mannington Commercial will launch new and updated products in 2022 for its carpet, luxury vinyl tile (LVT), rubber and resilient slab lines that will have 105% carbon offset. Customers now have the assurance that the products they specify will be at least carbon negative or carbon neutral, the company said. From raw material extraction to manufacturing (known as “cradle-to-gate”), the products will not contribute to the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, a major driver of greenhouse gas emissions.

Currently, more than a dozen new and upgraded products are CO2 offset, according to the company. With many more products slated for release later in the year, Mannington Commercial said it estimates total carbon offsets by 2022 will be the equivalent of removing more than 10,000 gas cars from the road for a year. New carpet products from 2022 are currently not included.

According to the company, the initiative is a critical step towards the company’s goal of accelerating the decarbonization of its operations and supply chain. It also addresses the most pressing environmental needs facing the flooring industry: clean energy, waste disposal and greenhouse gas emissions.

“As a family-owned company driven by American manufacturing, we have long cared about the people and communities we touch and make sure we try to do the right thing,” said Shane Totten, commercial director of sustainability at Mannington Commercial. “This initiative is at the heart of that philosophy. It is also a stepping stone towards the larger and longer-term goals in the areas of environment, society and health that we are setting. This is part of the holistic business approach we are taking to increase our overall social and sustainable stewardship.”

Effective immediately, and for complete transparency, all product specifications, according to the company, will indicate the 105% volume of carbon dioxide equivalent being offset per yard. Mannington Commercial said it already offers an industry-leading level of product transparency. This includes ensuring that its products have eco-friendly certifications such as responsible materials, declaration labels, environmental product declarations and health product declarations.

In addition, all Mannington Commercial products can contribute to LEED and Green Globe credits. And since all of its carpets, resilient sheets, rubbers and more than 90% of the company’s LVT products are made in the US, Mannington Commercial products have a lower carbon footprint when specified for US commercial construction projects compared to products made in the US. are manufactured or shipped internationally, according to the company.

Mannington Commercial said its carbon offset purchases are being invested in several projects that have been independently verified to reduce or eliminate carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. In line with the company’s priorities and relevant to the industry, the carbon offsets support projects in clean power generation, waste diversion and greenhouse gas capture/sequestration, the company said.
