International Code Council to help refine SolarAPP+’s permitting specs
The International Code Council and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the U.S. Department of Energy have joined forces to assess code compliance with permit specifications for clean energy technologies and battery storage systems for integration into the Solar Automated Permit Processing Platform (SolarAPP+ ). This partnership will continue to enhance the use of SolarAPP+ with local governments using the model codes developed by the Code Council.
As part of this work, the Code Council will provide key technical resources to ensure licensing requirements comply with International Codes (I-Codes). Using its technical expertise, the Code Council will review the specification within the SolarAPP+ to ensure compliance with the International Building Code 2018 and 2021 and the International Residential Code for all new features and improvements added to the application. start with energy storage.
The Code Council will further assist in raising awareness of SolarAPP+ across jurisdictions through direct contacts with local governments that are members or customers of the Code Council.

This announcement concludes a long-standing partnership between the Code Council, NREL and the SolarAPP+ coalition.
The joint assessment of the alignment of the licensing requirements of the Solar APP+ with the I-Codes is underway.
“We are excited to more formally involve the Code Council in the SolarAPP+ development process,” said Kristen Ardani, solar analytics program manager at NREL. “The Code Council will be critical in our efforts to expand the application into new functions while increasing adoption by local governments.”
