HSGS-Ameresco to install 700-kW solar + storage microgrid at White Sands Missile Range

HSGS-Ameresco, a joint venture certified as Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) by the Small Business Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), announced it has been awarded a contract to install a microgrid system on the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), the Department of Defense’s largest open-air military testing facility in New Mexico.

The new microgrid system is for several drinking water sources from the base and is designed to include a new 700 kW solar PV array, a 500 kW natural gas generator and a 500 kW battery energy storage system. The system is designed to provide power for 14 days to power the water sources in the event of a power outage, supporting critical missions in the Army Research Lab, Material Test Directorate, fire service and a Fort Bliss power projection platform.

“We are excited to implement this project to improve the reliability of WSMR’s power system,” said Dave McNeil, president and CEO of HSGS-Ameresco. “This versatile solution set will enhance the energy and water resistance of the base, so it no longer depends on a single power source.”

The scope of the project also includes updated electrical panels, transformers and controls; including a fiber optic communication line, a fire alarm system, meters, cybersecurity measures, counter-terrorism measures and security fences. HSGS-Ameresco will provide all supervision, labor, materials, equipment, supplies and transportation required to execute the microgrid project.

Construction will start in December 2022 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
