Final Fantasy X’s Tidus could have been a plumber

You all remember Tidus – Final Fantasy X’s protagonist, Blitzball player, and star of that awkward laughing meme you’ve probably seen here and there on the internet. Well, it turns out he wasn’t always the sports athlete you know and love and originally went on to become a plumber.

Final Fantasy X producer Yoshinori Kitase, screenwriter Kazushige Nojima, character designer Tetsuya Nomura and event director Motomu Toriyama spoke with famitsu to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary (thanks, Kotaku), going into some of the original plans for Tidus. “To get the character into the water, there was a time before the original plan when Tidus would become an underwater plumber,” explains Nojima.

That would be, until Kitase intervened with another idea. Inspired by his love of sci-fi movies with racing or sports elements, Kitase suggested turning Tidus from plumber to athlete. “Up until that point, there were no sports components in the Final Fantasy series,” Kitase says, “so I thought this would be a new challenge.”

Nojima and Kitase discussed the idea further and decided to make Tidus a water athlete as it would fit Kitase’s idea while, well, getting the character in the water.

Famitsu also asked Nomura if there were any traces of Tidus being a plumber in his final character design. “The overalls seem to be,” replies Nomura, who goes on to explain that he drew designs inspired by workwear before sporting them to emphasize Tidus’ shift in character design.

The developer ensemble also talked about the chance of a Final Fantasy X-3, and it “isn’t zero,” it seems.
