“Holidays are exciting times to escape the grind and get away,” said Ted Puzio, owner of Southern Trust Home Services. “While many homeowners are already thinking about stopping their mail, leaving a security light on, and making sure their doors are locked, they should also consider their air conditioning and plumbing.”

Puzio recommends doing the following before leaving your home empty while traveling:

  • Check windows and doors: As well as the security aspect of making sure your home is locked and safe during your trip, it ensures that all windows and doors are properly closed and sealed, keeping energy costs down by ensuring conditioned air does not escape.

  • Set the thermostat: Set your thermostat to Away Mode or to a temperature depending on the time of year that won’t overwork your system and benefit no one at home. If you have a smart thermostat, it can be programmed to return to a comfortable temperature when you arrive from vacation.

  • Disconnect electronics: Electronic devices, including small appliances, televisions and mobile charging cables, still consume power while plugged in, increasing your bill. Unplug all unnecessary appliances to avoid high electricity bills.

  • Adjust the boiler: If you are going to be away for more than 3 days, set the water heater to Holiday Mode or “VAC”. If the specific model does not have a holiday mode, adjust the temperature to 55 degrees to save energy.

  • Shut off the water: The last thing you want to return to is a flooded house. While you are away, turn off non-essential water taps for sinks and appliances, such as your washing machine and dishwasher. Double-check that any remaining water sources, such as your shower, sinks, toilet, and outdoor faucet, are not leaking or dripping.

“Between remembering to pack the sunscreen and making sure your household is safe, getting ready for vacation can be overwhelming,” Puzio said. “Start early and take a few simple, additional preventative measures before you leave to make sure your plumbing, air, and electrical appliances are in order too. It’s worth avoiding coming home with unplanned expenses, and if you need help preparing your home, be sure to contact a licensed and insured professional who will perform a thorough home inspection.”
