Proper plumbing is something we rarely think about until disaster strikes. And when our sinks get clogged, or our toilets overflow, or our pipes burst, it’s often our own fault. Save your plumber this winter and follow these directions from James Willis of Ray Lusk Plumbing.

How important is it to keep the faucets dripping in the winter when it gets below freezing?

It is very important to keep faucets dripping during freezing temperatures. Drip hot and cold water on exterior wall sinks. Open cabinet doors under the sinks. Drip bath and shower faucets if they are on exterior walls. Remove tubing and install covers on all outer tubing bibs.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve pulled out of a drain?

The strangest thing I’ve found in a drain was a gold chain. I pulled a toilet in a house to see what caused it [it] to stop regularly and found a chain stuck to the toilet drain pipe. I showed the necklace to the customer, [and] she told me her husband had given her the necklace before he died, and she couldn’t remember what had happened to the necklace.
