Your fruits and veggies might pass through this solar-powered distribution center in California

Wholesale of foodstuffs United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) has completed the eighth and largest installation of rooftop solar panels at its distribution center in Riverside, California. The 6.7 MW array is expected to generate approximately 80% of the site’s electricity needs.

“Our on-site sustainable energy projects, especially our solar panels, are one of our key strategies to achieve our climate goals and support operational resilience,” said Kevin Alavi, Director of Sustainable Operations at UNFI. “This project reflects our broader approach to impact: delivering strong business value while reducing emissions. It also highlights the dedication of our internal teams who continually challenge themselves to do the right thing and make UNFI better every day.”

The solar panel, developed by PowerFlex, is expected to reduce the distribution center’s emissions by 85%. PowerFlex has completed similar solar projects for UNFI elsewhere in California in New Jersey.

“This collaboration shows how renewable energy can benefit both the environment and the local economy,” said Raphael Derclercq, CEO of PowerFlex. “It created skilled jobs during construction and helps UNFI control energy costs while advancing climate goals.”
